RICK'S BRIEF BIOGRAPHY: Rick is Full Professor & Chair of the Statistics Department at the University of Idaho. He holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Wyoming (1983) and served as QUEST Professor & QUEST Honors Program Executive Director in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland (2001-2004), Full Professor & Director of the Center for Quality & Productivity Improvement (CQPI) at Colorado State University (1988-2001) and held Visiting Professorships in the Quality & Innovation Research Group at Aarhus University (the Aarhus School of Business Denmark: 1997-1998), the Division of Quality & Environmental Management at Luleå University (Sweden: Fall 2000), and provides periodic lectures at participating institutions of the European Masters Programme in Total Quality Management. From 1998-2002 he served as Founding Executive Director of the Multinational Alliance for the Advancement of Organizational Excellence and from 2002-present on the Academic Advisory Council of the E-TQM College in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, a recent presentation for which (March 2007) is available here.  In 1992 Rick was a Special Congressional appointee under the Securing Eastern European Democracy (SEED) Program as Fulbright Senior Scholar to Comenius University in Czechoslovakia, but delayed notification led to inability to accept the appointment.

Rick is one of six academics globally (three from America) among 21 Voices of Quality for the 21st Century (ASQ: 2000). Invited lectures include keynote addresses and lectures at Oxford University, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, and on behalf of the National Science Foundation. His research and publication activities include collaborative efforts with colleagues from more than one dozen nations with unifying themes of quality, innovation, and improvement with his efforts addressing six sigma innovation & design, sustainable development, and derivation or application of statistical methods to quality & reliability engineering. Results have appeared in such leading journals as Communications of the ACM, Total Quality Management, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality Progress, and the International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management. Rick's most recent keynote addresses were given at the 11th World Congress for Total Quality Management in Wellington, New Zealand in December 2006 and at the 1st Annual Congress of the Middle East Quality Association in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in March 2007.

Rick has chaired or served as a member of scientific or organizing committees for conferences in America, Australia, and Europe and served as co-editor of Measuring Business Excellence and on the editorial review boards of The Six Sigma Forum, Six Sigma & Competitive Advantage, Quality Engineering, International Journal of Product Development, International Journal of Manufacturing Technology & Management and the International Journal of Business Performance Management.

Honors include Marquis Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World in Quality, Manchester Who’s Who Among Executives & Professionals and Honors Edition, Marquis Who’s Who Among American Teachers, Marquis Who’s Who Among Scientists & Engineers, and Empire Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals in Education.

Narrative: My research focus has migrated from a more tactical one emphasizing development of statistical methodologies with applications in quality and reliability engineering to one that is both more strategic and holistic, emphasizing innovation, design, and business excellence across a broad spectrum. Accomplishments in this area led to citation by the American Society for Quality as one of “21 Voices of Quality for the 21^st Century” in the January 2000 issue of Quality Progress, Who’s Who in America since 1998 and Who’s Who in the World in Quality. Areas of research and publication have included:

Six Sigma Innovation & Design (2000-Current): I define “Six Sigma” as “a highly structured process for acquiring, assessing, and applying client, competitor, and enterprise intelligence to yield superior product, process, and enterprise innovations and designs.” This is a rapidly developing research area of mine at both applications and field-defining levels. Publications have appeared or will soon appear in Quality Progress, Quality & Reliability Engineering International Journal, Six Sigma Forum, Measuring Business Excellence, Total Quality Management and Business Excellence, and Six Sigma and Competitive Advantage.

Related Activities & Results: Multiple invited lectures at international conferences and professional organizations. Development of academic courses for four audiences (two graduate, one honors, one senior level) with the MS and QUEST Honors courses targeted at the Blackbelt level. Quality Progress contribution earned the cover of the January 2004 issue and the editorial introduction to the issue. Invited presentation to board of Swedish Quality Association.

Sustainable Development and BEST Business Excellence (2000-Current): Develops the BEST Business Excellence Model with BEST representing Biophysical, Economic, Societal, and Technological “bottom lines” with an integrating theme of sustainable development. Apart from the model, means of joint optimization of the four bottom lines and deployment of the model through Macro-QFD are developed. Published results appear in leading journals including Total Quality Management, Measuring Business Excellence, AI and Society, World Review of Science Technology & Sustainable Development, and TQM Magazine. Sustainable Development is widely regarded as "Development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability to meet the needs of future generations".

Related Activities and Results: A large number of invited lectures, articles, and international keynote addresses have resulted from this emphasis. Among these are lectures at Oxford University (England), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia), University of Versailles (France), and Aalborg University (Denmark). Additional activities include an intensive doctoral course at Luleå University (Sweden), an honors course at Colorado State University, and a lecture series for executives in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as an activity of the E-TQM College.

Leadership and Innovation for Business Excellence (1998-current): Provided what is now a widely used definition of Business Excellence – an approach that regards quality across multiple dimensions. Publications appearing in both the leading scholarly and practitioner journals emphasizing quality including Total Quality Management, the TQM Magazine, Quality Progress, Leadership & Organizational Development Journal, and Journal of Management Systems.  A subset of this area resulting in a series of contributions to Quality Engineering and The TQM Magazine is exploration of Cultural & Historical Development of Quality Internationally.

Related Activities & Results: Edited special issue of the Journal of Management Systems on Leadership for Business Excellence; Founded and served as first Executive Director of the Multinational Alliance for the Advancement of Organizational Excellence – an organization with participants from more than 20 nations on six continents that held its fourth international conference in 2003 – co-chaired first international MAAOE conference; invited service on a National Science Foundation panel; served on numerous conference scientific or organizing committees.

Statistical Methods with Applications in Quality & Reliability Engineering (1983-97): Statistical approaches included statistical computation & simulation as well as derivation of a number of methods based on the Inverse Gaussian Distribution – a probability model useful especially in (accelerated) reliability and life testing. Methods for the Inverse Guassian Distribution developed or extended included sequential probability ratio tests & CUSUM control charts, control charts for (reciprocal) average performance and dispersion, and analogues to regression and analysis of variance. Results appeared in such leading journals as The American Statistician, Australian Journal of Statistics, Communications of the ACM, Communications in Statistics, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management, and Quality & Reliability Engineering International.  Numerous conference proceedings.
