Arts Powered Schools

Partnering with the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the State Department of Education and the Idaho Alliance for Art Education, the UI Art Education program was the local sponsor of the Arts Powered Schools Institute in July 2003. Over 25 teachers and administrators from schools in Idaho attended the residential institute on the University of Idaho campus to learn to effectively integrate the arts into their schools and curriculum. Sally Machlis taught the visual arts component. The Arts Powered Schools Institute has continued at various sites and has grown in enrollment each year.

Hope Circle Workshops

Since the summer of 2007, The Department of Art and Design has been partnering with the Hope Circle Art Center and the Outskirts Gallery in Hope, Idaho to provide high quality hands-on art workshops for the community and summer visitors to the state of Idaho. The workshops are designed for artists, teachers, and individuals who would like to expand their artistic skills and access their creativity.

Professionals in the art field present varied and innovative workshops for two-day workshops at the Hope Circle Art Center. The lead teacher is nationally recognized ceramic artist Glenn Grishkoff. Collaborating teachers have included: painter, mixed media artist and University of Idaho associate professor Sally Machlis; printmaker, painter and University of Idaho instructor Val Carter; and ceramic artist and University of Idaho alum and Western Arizona College assistant professor Angel Luna. The workshops highlight information about new media, techniques, and concepts in the field of visual art. The participants have the opportunity to work in a studio environment in beautiful north Idaho.
