Stephan Flores (engl345)-Date: Thursday, January 15, 2004 11:04am---Hello. Just learning this, and will soon start to post/add topics based initially on each play -and week for the semester to facilitate posting and locating the required twice weekly -journal/discussion entries. Remember, for any particular week, your first entry should be a -Thesis-Sentence statement, to be posted under the appropriate topic/week before class on -Tuesday; your second entry should be a brief sentence to paragraph length response to -some aspect of the play, class discussion, and/or another student's thesis-sentence, to be -posted by noon Friday. Remember to copy/collect your entries as you go along so that you -will be ready to submit your entries to me in a separate document/folder, collected at -midterm and at the end of the semester.--Meanwhile, let's use this first threaded topic to introduce yourself (name, major, where you -are from? anything else you'd like to add about your interest in Shakespeare?).--I look forward to your comments, questions, and discussions.—

Matthew Roesener (roes0333)-Date: Thursday, January 15, 2004 5:09pm---BIO:--Matthew Scott Roesener-Born: 11/25/1982 in Idaho Falls, ID-Graduated: Homeschool, June 2000-Major: Theatre Arts (Bachelor of the Fine arts in Directing and Stage Management, -Graduating May 2004)-Second Major: English (To be completed eventually.... I promise)--As far as my interest in Shakespeare goes: I am a theatre major, as listed above, so -the natural tendency is to revere Shakespeare's works as the ultimate in "classical" -theatre. I have attempted only cursury studies of his works, and as such am excited to -learn more and dive deeply into the literary side of a few of Shakespeare's play.--I love telling stories - and Shakespeare has some of the most intricate and layered -stories I have ever read - at least have read and enjoyed. As a director, it is my job to -dissect each play I produce down to a very analytical and precise level. The more tools I -have in my arsenal of analysis and criticism, the better story teller I will be.---Matthew Scott Roesener—

Kyle West (west2618)-Date: Thursday, January 15, 2004 5:41pm---My Name is Kyle West.-I grew up in Moscow. My majors are Theatre Arts and Psychology.--I have been involed in the production of many of Shakespeare's plays. -So many that I am no longer certian which ones I was in. Producing a-play and examining a script from a literary standpoint are often very-different things. I am looking forward to delving into Shakespeare. My-goal through study of Shakespeare is to strengthen my understanding of-his complex characters, actions, and themes.—

Kalia Kopke (kopk5109)-Date: Thursday, January 15, 2004 6:44pm---My name is Kaila Kopke, I was born in Moscow while my parents were attending the U of -I but moved to Bethesda Maryland when I was three. I was raised in Maryland, -graduated high school in '00, and recently transferred to the U of I last semester from -University of Maryland for a change in scenery. And it was quite a change. I'm still -adjusting. - I'm doing a major in English and have always enjoyed Shakespeare. In high school I -was fortunate enough to have a teacher who taught Shakespeare literature and acting -classes. She had studied at Oxford and traveled with the Royal Shakespearean theater -troupe so she was amazing, and gave all of us a love for the works. I am looking -forward to this semester to go deeper into the selected plays, and to hear all the -different ideas and perspectives of people in the class.—

Melody Niesen (nies0912)-Date: Friday, January 16, 2004 3:54pm---I am an English major with an emphasis in teaching. I grew up in Boise,-Idaho and this is my fourth year attending the U of I. Shakespeare is a-staple in cannonical literature and I hope to gain a larger (more-thorough) appreciation for his writing. –

Glenda Anderson (ande3349)-Date: Friday, January 16, 2004 7:50pm---My name is Glenda Anderson. I am an English major. I also was fortunate enough to -have a high school teacher well versed in shakespeare and theater arts. I started -reading shakespeare when I was 9 years old and have always enjoyed both plays and -sonnets. I would just like to further my knowledge this semester and enjoy reading the -plays. –

Crystal DeCell (dece1799)-Date: Saturday, January 17, 2004 12:44am---My name is Crystal DeCell. I grew up in Post Falls. I am a sophomore and am in the -process of changing my major to English with a creative writing emphasis and possibly -history. My first interest in Shakespeare came when I was about nine. When I was a -freshman in high school I was fortunate enough to be cast in a very minor role in A -Midsummer Nights Dream. This semester I am hoping to gain a greater understanding and -appreciation for Shakespeare's writing.—

Shiann Boyd (boyd0329)-Date: Monday, January 19, 2004 4:31pm---My name is Shiann Boyd and I am from Chimacum, WA. I first attended Washington -State University before transferring to the UI in 2002. I am double majoring in both -theatre and visual communications and will be done and out of here in May. --I really loved the works of Shakespeare when I read then in high school but, -unfortunately, I am somewhat turned off from them now. I had the misfortune of being -assistant stage manager/sound op. for a production of A Midsummer Nights Dream set in -1969 and a production of MacBeth set in Nazi German (at WSU) and both have somewhat -killed my fondness of reading and putting on Shakespeare plays. I further want to be -perfectly honest and admit that I am taking this class solely because I need it to -substitute for theatre history in order to graduate. Please do not hold this against me. I -have an open mind and look forward to reading some of the plays that I have not yet -read and rereading and analyzing the ones that I already have. Perhaps in doing so I -will regain that thrill for Shakespeare that I once had. –

Tegan Van De Vliert (vand7054)-Date: Monday, January 19, 2004 6:40pm---Hi, my name is Tegan Van De Vliert. I am from Middleton, Idaho- a small town 30min -from Boise. Peter Stegner (steg6342)-Date: Monday, January 19, 2004 8:25pm---My major is English, I'm from Lewiston, which is about 30 minutes south of Moscow, and I -am a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.--As for Shakespeare, I have read many of his plays throughout my years in school, bu I -am looking forward to studying him more in depth than in the past.—

Shasta Hankins (hank5716)-Date: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 1:33am---Hi, I'm Shasta Hankins and I grew up in North Idaho most of my life. I'm from -Sandpoint, ID and currently call Moscow home. I'm graduating next spring but finishing -up my last 2 semesters at the U of I and then heading to Auatralia in January 2005. I will -be graduating college with a BFA in theatrical makeup. --My intereste with Shakespeare ranges from complex plot, characters, and witty -dialogue. I find his writing very detailed and fresh. Shakespeare still amazes me with -how much hidden meanings he throws in and complex ideas/issues. I'm hoping to have -a better graps at the language after completing this course, and analyzing text better. -Shakespeare is quite complicated as well all know, and I want to feel more comfortable -reading it by the end of the semester. –

Christine Wuthrich (wuth0184)-Date: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 9:23am---My name is Christine Wuthrich... just call me Chrissy. I'm a Theatre-Major. I'm from Kuna, Idaho it's down south just outside of Boise. I,-like a number of you, am taking this course to get myself more familiar-with Shakespeare's language. I really enjoy Shakespeare's works and am-very excited that we'll be reading Titus Andronicus since it is one of-my favorite plays he's written.---Reply  Quote  Download -Message no. 47 -Author:

Tegan Van De Vliert (vand7054)-Date: Thursday, January 22, 2004 11:43pm---I simply wanted to ask why Titus Andronicus was one of your fave Shakespeare plays- it -is rather gruesome and tragic. –

Rhonda Parkhurst (park9775)-Date: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 9:38am---Good Morning, -My name is Rhonda Parkhurst and I am from Potlatch, Idaho which is a small town -located close to Moscow. I am a senior majoring in secondary English and Special -Education and upon graduation I plan on focusing my teaching on special education. I -have always enjoyed Shakespeare and I am excitied to learn more about his work!—

Jared Smith (smit7692)-Date: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 10:00am---My name is Jared Smith. I'm an English (creative writing emphasis) major. My main -interest is in preserving the health of my back while lugging the Greenblatt Shakespeare -edition around in my backpack for six hours at a time.—

Elizabeth Delderfield (deld5128)-Date: Tuesday, January 20, 2004 11:54am---I've had little/no experience with Shakespeare, but I"m not skinning myself with a potato -peeler yet, so that MUST be a good sign : ) I've always appreciated subtle humor, where -the author feels confident enough not to have to bash the reader over the head with it, so -I'm enjoying that. --Personal school bio - I'm in my sophomore or junior year credit-wise, second year here. -I graduated HS in 2000, decided to get cancer and have some fun with bone marrow -transplants, used up at least 450 of nice people's blood donations...I got two hip -replacements in there somewhere, so if you see me outside taking baby steps on the ice, -looking like I"m about to retch over my fear of falling, you would be absolutely correct. --I am a teaching emphasis English major. My hope is to have enough of a grasp of -shakespeare to not look like a dumbass while trying to teach a bunch of teenagers about -him. Yeah, my aspiriations really ARE higher than that, but it's like a birthday wish - tell -someone how much you want to succeed, and at semester's end have egg on your face -and an F on your grade posting.—

Colin Addington (addi6822)-Date: Friday, January 23, 2004 12:03pm---I am from Boise, a 2001 grad. I'm a creative writing major, but i've been recently -thinking of switching to literature, because quite frankly, i don't think i've got a -snowflake's chance in hell of ever making it as a writer. Anyways, i LOVE Shakespeare's -writing. I'm taking this class for the second time, 'cause last semester i was in it but -shattered my foot in an accident and got waaaay too far behind. Awesomely enough, we -don't seem to be doing any of the plays we did last semester. I am stoked! Yeah for -Shakespeare! (I know, I'm sick, but please don't be a hater.)---
