HAMLET AND ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENTERN ARE DEAD
in repertory, by William Shakespeare and by Tom Stoppard, directed by Stephen Coleman,
University of Pittsburgh, 1996

The central image of a mask, a primitive devise for transformation, forms the symbol of Hamlet's fate
to avenge his father's death. Parapets of the castle and several isolated perches, small and precarious,
create a variety of acting areas on the set. Welder's goggles are flown in for R&G,
a theatrical version of Groucho Marx glasses.
