Extra Credit Project #1

“Toplighting Tour of Moscow”

ARCH 464 ECS

Due: Monday, January 29, 11:20 am

For this project, visit at least four (4) spaces that have natural toplighting fixtures.

Sketch the spaces in plan & section or perspective on brown paper (recycle: use paper bags), render the lighting with an appropriate pastel or white colored pencil, and the deep shadows with a dark colored pencil. Make sure the electric lights are turned off when you record your observations.

Evaluation and Critique: What special problems or advantages does the orientation of the glazing cause? Are any measures taken to overcome them? Comment on the amount and quality of light in the space. Does the electric lighting system complement or ignore the natural lighting? Is the space used at night? Are the electric lighting fixtures integrated with the natural lighting fixtures? How is the daylighting exploited in the space? Could the space be improved?

Write an overall impression of your tour.
