Extra Credit Project #2

“Electrical Lighting Tour of Moscow”

Arch. 464 ECS

Due: Monday, February 26, at 11:20 am

For this project you will visit at least four indoor spaces during the evening and then during the day to compare the night and day lighting conditions. Your goal is to find four spaces illuminated by four different types of lamps. This might be hard since LEDs are everywhere!

Sketch the spaces in plan and section showing the location and type of the electric lamps and fixtures.
  • Identify the lamps (e.g. fluorescent tube F40 T-12 CW, CFL 12 watts, LED 6 watts, etc.).
  • Identify the fixtures by lighting strategy(s) used (indirect, general diffuse, direct, etc.).
  • Draw a detailed section through one key lamp and fixture from each space, showing an approximate photometric curve based on your observation of the light distribution.

Evaluation and Critique: Observe the spaces from afar (from outdoors if possible) to get an accurate impression of the color and quality of light. Take a color wheel with you and examine it in each space. Comment on the color rendering of the lighting. Is the lighting appropriate to the activity in the space? Does the lighting enhance the space beyond its daytime appearance? Is there integration between daylight and electric light? Is the level of light too low, adequate, or too intense? How are glare problems avoided (or not)?

Write an overall impression of your tour.

Format: Bound 8½“ by 11" sheets.
