The Pre-Classic Period (1500 B.C. - 250A.D.)

During this period, development of the Mayan civilization was strongest in the Guatemalan highland area.  Elementary hieroglyphics and the calendar were evolving, although Mayan sculpture still shared the styles of their Olmec neighbors.
