Proposition: "Prominent
Architect X" practices green architecture.
Pro: One student shall take the pro side of
the debate and present research and a compelling argument that supports
the proposition. The oral presentation shall be
in Adobe pdf presentation mode and is limited to 15 slides and 7
minutes.
Con: Another student shall take the con
side of the debate and present research and a compelling argument that
disproves the proposition. The oral presentation shall be
in Adobe pdf presentation mode and is limited to 15 slides and 7
minutes.
Debate Format: A coin toss will determine
who presents first. After the initial arguments, each debater will be
allowed a brief rebuttal (2 minutes each side) followed by questions or statements of support
from the audience (15 minute limit). I will have a stopwatch on hand to
time the events.
Please upload your debate presentation to the course Dropbox folder prior to the
debate, and the instructor will post them on the course web site so they will be available to
course members while in England as well as before and after.
Research: Students shall gather evidence
from at least three sources—the architect's web site, our text London's
Contemporary Architecture, web- or print-based architectural
journals (see below), or books. Evidence of particular interest
includes design philosophy, quotations from the architects and/or their
critics, built works' performance and features, and critical analysis of
the work. Try to include buildings that the class may explore while in
London. Cite sources for all images and for all information included in
your presentation.
