Schedule

Don't print this, it will be updated periodically.

Postcards from London
Each student will create at least one postcard each week while in London. Use photos and drawings to create the obverse side and write a message to the person of your choice on the reverse side. Use your imagination about to whom you address the cards. Each week post your cards to our London 2022 Google Drive Postcards folder. We'll review your cards at the end of the day on Thursdays (Jul 7, 14, and 21) with a crit on Jul 26. Your postcards will be the theme for the course show of work during the next academic year.

Journal

While studying abroad, students are required to keep a critical journal of their experiences focusing on both sustainable architecture and green urbanism—in their three dimensions environmental, cultural, and economic. The journal can be handcrafted or computer-generated ... or any combination of the two modes of representation. Evaluation of the city's components vis-ŕ-vis the appropriate Green City Checklist categories and urban diary keeping would be appropriate and useful.

Your journal should include:
  • Calendar. A one-page summary of your itinerary, sites visited, and events attended.
  • London Discovery Experience. Documentation and analysis of at least four discovery experiences.
  • Green Buildings. Critical analysis of buildings visited with architects identified, commentary, sketches, diagrams, and photographs.
  • Office Visits. Review of the office and body of work presented with comments, sketches, photographs.
  • Design Charette. Critical presentation of the process and results of the charette. Charette materials, including the site plan and brief are available on the London2022 Google Drive.
  • Cultural Sites. Reviews and analyses of museums, parks, theatres, and educational facilities. Note both green features (e.g., daylighting) and cultural significance. Illuminate with sketches, diagrams, and photographs.
  • Transportation. Experience and analyze multiple modes of transportation. Comment on green aspects and cultural significance. Illustrate with sketches, diagrams, and photographs.
  • Conferences, lectures, and debates. Critically review each presentation and illustrate as appropriate.

Use Adobe InDesign to its fullest to create a comprehensive journal and export it as a reduced size PDF. InDesign offers auto pagination, paragraph style tagging, easily updated links to illustrations that you adjust in Photoshop or Illustrator, and seamless integration of text and illustration.

UK Deadlines. There will be periodic due dates for the journal in progress and the work developed in the design charette.

  • Tuesday, 12 July: Two weeks in London: draft journal and 2 post cards
  • Tuesday, 26 July: Charette prep, and post cards for the "show of work" to display in fall 2022 or spring 2023 (size: up to 24" x36" PDF boards)

Post your work to our London2022 Google drive.

Final Journal

The final journal, due on August 1, should be a document that you would proudly present to potential employers during job interviews and share with your friends and family to relive your adventure. Post it to our London2022 Google Drive.

Also submit your 30 best photos of people and places and 10 best sketches. You can do this after July 30—the photos and sketches are simply for sharing, not for grading. Since your digital journals and photos are on our London2022 Google Drive, they are available to share among the class.

Show of Work: "Postcards from London"

For the students returning for fall term in Moscow, Print your postcards in a suitable fashion for display [don't be boring!], then we'll all mount a show of your postcards in the Commons Reflections Gallery TBA. For non-returning students we will print your cards for the show, unless you want to come to Moscow and do it yourself! We'll also display work from the Green Serpentine design charette.
