Letter Grade Column

There are two common methods of displaying letter grades in the Grade Center.

Dynamic Letter Grade Column

Follow these steps to create a Letter Grade column that dynamically updates as student grades are added to the Grade Center.

  • Under the Control Panel, expand the Grade Center.
  • Go to the Full Grade Center.
  • The Grade Center comes pre-built with a "Total Column" and a "Weighted Total Column". If your Grade Center does not have one of these columns, create EITHER a "Total Column" (the final grade is a simple total of all of points possible) or a "Weighted Total Column" (the final grade is percentage-based, applying different percentages to each assessment type). Determine which of these two columns works best for your course using the comparison below:
Total
  75 pts Project
  45 pts Tests
  30 pts Particip.
  150 pts
Weighted Total
  50% Project
  30% Tests
  20% Particip.
  100%

  • Create a new column to display a Letter Grade based on the final grade column.
    • On the Action Bar under Create Calculated Column, select Total Column.
    • Fill in the column name (e.g., Letter Grade).
    • Set Primary Display to Letter.
      TIP: Review Letter Grade Schema
    • Under Select Columns, press the Selected Columns and Categories option.
    • Click on the Total column and then press the right pointing arrow to move it over to the Selected Columns.
    • Select "Yes" to Calculate as Running Total which exempts gradable columns with no score. Select "No" to include ALL gradable columns--forcing 0's for no scores. If you select "Yes", you must manually enter zeros for any missed assessments.
    • Set Show this Column to Students to "Yes" (if you're ready for your students to see their grades).
    • Press Submit to save your settings.
    • BbLearn will display a Success message indicating the Letter Grade column has been created.
    • Scroll to the far right side of the Grade Center to see the new column.

    Manual Letter Grade Column

Follow these steps to create a Letter Grade column where you can manually type in the grades.

    • Under the Control Panel, expand the Grade Center.
    • Go to the Full Grade Center.
    • Click the Create Column button.
    • Enter a Column Name (e.g., Letter Grade).
    • Set Primary Display to text.
    • Press Submit to finish.
