Import Questions from a Word Doc

BbLearn allows you to write questions offline in a text file and upload it into tests, surveys, and question pools. The Built-in method they provide is outlined in detail on Blackboard's Help Site. An Alternative method is outlined below.

OVERVIEW

A Blackboard Test Generator allows you to type up test questions using a program like Microsoft Word, Notepad, or TextEdit and not have to go through the slow process of building your questions via BbLearn's interface.

  1. Format Questions - Question/Answer layout must EXACTLY MATCH the formatting rules defined by the Blackboard Test Generator you will be using.
  2. Convert Questions - Convert Questions/Answers to a TXT or ZIP file using a Blackboard Test Generator
  3. Import Questions - Import the resulting TXT or ZIP file into a BbLearn Question Pool

Blackboard Test Generators

CSI's Quiz Generator, used by UI instructors for many years, was removed from the Internet on 4-13-2020. Oklahoma Christian University replaces CSI and uses the same file format for an easy transition.

Oklahoma Christian University's Blackboard Test Generator

  • Oklahoma Christian University's Blackboard Test Generator
  • Available question types: multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, essay, fill in the blank, and matching.
  • Create a document with nothing but the Questions and Answers you wish to import into BbLearn: no titles/headers, no descriptions, no point values, etc. Refer to the Question Format shown below for exact formatting requirements.
  • If you are using Microsoft Word, save your questions using File > Save As > Plain Text (.txt). Note: If you are using a MAC, be sure to select the following additional settings: a) MS-DOS, b) UNCHECK Select insert line breaks, c) CR / LF, d) CHECK Allow character substitution
  • Open the .txt file version of your questions in Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac).
  • Turn Word Wrap Off. Once Word Wrap is off, you will be able see where the extra return characters are that must be removed for the Quiz Generator to work correctly. (To do this in Notepad, go to Format and uncheck Word Wrap.)
  • Mark each correct answer with an Asterisk (*) placed at the very beginning of the line.
  • Verify each question formatting is correct (see below).

Question Format

EVERY Question and Answer must start with an identifier (typically a number or a letter--this can be either upper or lower case) followed by a period or parenthesis. This is followed by the Question or Answer text which must be entered on a single line--NO newlines or return characters. Separate each question with a blank line. Mark each correct answer with an Asterisk (*).

  1. MULTIPLE CHOICE
    • Question on one line: 1. text
    • Each Answer on one line: a. text
    • Asterisk (*) in front of correct choice
  2. MULTIPLE ANSWER
    • Question on one line: 2. text
    • Each Answer on one line: a. text
    • Asterisk (*) in front of each correct choice
  3. TRUE/FALSE
    • Question on one line: 3. text
    • Answer on one line: true
...where answer must be: t, true, f, or false
  4. ESSAY
    • Question on one line: 4. text
  5. FILL IN THE BLANK
    • Place keyword: 'blank'┬ábefore question: blank 5. text
    • Each alternative answer on one line: a. text
    • If one of the alternative answers is provided, the answer will be marked correct.
  6. MATCHING
    • Place keyword: 'match' before question: match 6. text
    • Separate each match pair by a slash: a. text/text
    • Leave one side blank for entries with no match: b. text/ or c. /text
    • Entries will be randomized

* Edit your questions and answers once they are stored in BbLearn to restore omitted formatting such as line breaks.

Convert Questions

The Oklahoma Christian University has created a tool for converting text documents into Blackboard question pools and have graciously made the tool available to the world.

  • In Notepad/TextEdit Copy your questions and answers.
  • Launch the Test Generator, then enter a Test Name.
  • Paste your questions into the test generator text box.
  • Verify the pasted text shown in the text box has just one blank line between each question and no blank lines between the answers. Delete any unwanted line spaces found.
  • Press Generate Test Questions.
  • The Test Generator will tell you how many questions it converted at the bottom of the screen.
Note: Make sure that the number of questions it thinks you submitted matches the number of questions submitted. If not, the text document needs further edits.
  • The Test Generator offers two file format options for importing questions into BbLearn:
    • OPTION 1: Press the "Download Test Questions" to download a file.txt containing your questions. The .txt file created by this option is formatted to work with the Upload Questions button available when editing a Question Pool or a Test.
    • OPTION 2: Press "Download Question Pool" to download a file.zip containing your questions. The file created by this option is formated to work with the Import Pool button available when viewing the list of Pools in a course. Note: If you are using the browser Safari, it may be setup to automatically open zip files, which in this case will unzip the file making it useless for your needs. Before pressing "Download Question Pool" to download the ZIP file, verify your Safari settings are correct by clicking Preferences and making sure the option Open "safe" files after downloading is unchecked. Alternatively, use a different browser to run the Test Generator and download the ZIP file.
