Setup Gradable Group Discussions

Create a Group Set

  • From the Control Panel, under Users and Groups, select Groups
  • Select Create
  • Select the Group Set Random Enroll
  • Create a Title for your Group Set
  • The Group Available option should be Yes
  • Un-select ALL unneeded group tools such the Blog, Calendar or Wiki.
  • Make sure that Discussion Board remains selected.
  • Scroll down and enter either the number of students you want in each group, or the number of groups you'd like to create.
  • Press Submit to create the Group Set

Setup Grading for Group Discussions

  • Under Control Panel, click on Course Tools to expand
  • Select Discussion Board
  • You will see a list of all discussion boards for the course with the group discussion boards listed underneath the course's default discussion board.

    Note: Group discussions appear in the Course Tools' Discussion Board for Instructor access, but are not viewable from a Discussion Board that has been added to the left menu.
  • Enter the Group Discussion Board you wish to modify by clicking on its Title
  • Inside the Group Discussion Board, click the option menu next to the Group Forum
  • Select Edit
  • You may rename this initial Group Forum
  • Under Forum Settings, select Grade Discussion Forum option and enter the Points Possible. (This will automatically create a column in the Grade Center.)
  • (Optional) Associate a Rubric with this Forum. Learn more about Rubrics.
  • Leave the option to Allow Members to Create New Threads checked, unless you have a specific reason to not allow this.
  • Click the Submit button to save your settings.
  • BbLearn will display a success message indicated that your discussion forum has been edited.
  • You may generate additional Group Forums within the Group Discussion Board container by pressing Create Forum. All Forums housed within the Group Discussion Board are only be accessible to the Group Members. Each Group Forum may be setup as gradable, if needed.
  • Don't forget to repeat these steps for each Group in your Group Set (e.g. Group 2, Group 3, Group 4, ...). To repeat the process for the next Group in the set, go back to the Control Panel's Course Tools and select Discussion Board.
