Roles with Grade Access

It is the Registrar's policy to add instructors to BbLearn courses a MAXIMUM of three months prior to the beginning of a term. Instructors without an active EPAF can be added by the departmental scheduler a Maximum of one week prior to the beginning of the term. If an Instructor wishes to add content to BbLearn before receiving course access, they may Request a [PREP] Course Space to add their content to and then later, perform a Course Copy into their official course.

Instructors

Instructors are added to courses for the current term through BANNER by the departmental scheduler. (This is the only BbLearn role with access to VandalWeb student records.)

Instructors have a significant responsibility for teaching and grading "for credit" courses. They can build, modify, and delete course content in BbLearn. They may create, manage, and grade all types of student assessments. They have full access to the BbLearn Grade Center in their courses and may add columns, enter scores, and setup final grade calculations.

Builder-Graders

Builder-Graders (a.k.a. Teaching Assistants (TAs)) are added to courses for the current term via a request sent from a departmental scheduler to Classroom Scheduling. Undergraduate students cannot be Builder-Graders in BbLearn.

Builder-Graders encompass the same responsibilities as that of the Grader, but also have permission to help instructors build/maintain courses in BbLearn. They can build, modify, and delete course content. They may create, manage, and grade all types of student assessments. They have full access to the BbLearn Grade Center and may add columns, enter scores, and setup final grade calculations.

Graders

Graders are added to courses for the current term via a request sent from a departmental scheduler to Classroom Scheduling. Undergraduate students cannot be Graders in BbLearn.

Graders may assist instructors with grading, but cannot help build course content. They may grade all types of student assessments and have access to the BbLearn Grade Center.

Guidelines and Policies

Guidelines for appointment of faculty and affiliated instructional support are outlined in the Faculty Staff Handbook (FSH) Ch. 1, 1565-D. Instructors and those serving in a supporting course delivery role may be given access to student education records based on their "legitimate educational interest" (see FERPA Regulations).

The university has a standing policy that undergraduate students are not allowed to have student record access in VandalWeb. Because the Builder-Grader and Grader roles in BbLearn carry similar risks, undergraduate students are not allowed to be Builder-Graders or Graders. Undergraduates may assist with courses, but will not be given access as Builder-Graders or Graders in BbLearn. Instructors need to identify different support options for this function. Please contact the Office of the Registrar for further clarification.
