File Compression

Most digital cameras produce large, high quality files so that you can print them. However, for viewing on the web, it's best to crop and resize these large images so that they download quickly, and are easily viewable on screen. Below you'll find help on compressing the file size for images, PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations, and Word documents.

Image Compression

You can use just about any image editor to crop, resize, and save an image. FotoFlexer is a very simple online photo editing tool that doesn't require a login.

  • Go to FotoFlexer.
  • Click the Upload Photo button.
  • Press the Upload button, or select to one of the options to get photos you've already put online.
  • Use the Crop tool to select the area you want to keep. Press Enter to complete the Crop and delete the area you don't want to keep.
  • Use the Resize tool to make the image a smaller dimension. Keep in mind, images generally do not look good if you make them larger than they were originally created.
  • Use the Save button to save you image to your computer.

PDF Compression

  • Microsoft Office Applications such as Word and PowerPoint can save documents as PDF files with the Save As or Save as Adobe PDF options.
  • Adobe Acrobat DC is a popular PDF creator with a feature called Fast Web View. This feature allows a PDF document to be downloaded one page at a time. However, Chrome's built-in PDF reader can only view the first page of a Fast Web View PDF file stored inside BbLearn. So we recommend disabling the Fast Web View feature by going to Preference and unchecking Save As optimizes for Fast Web View.
