STATEMENT FROM
THE IDAHO STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION BEFORE THE AIRING OF “IT’S ELEMENTARY,”
SEPTEMBER 7, 1999
Good evening. My name is Karen McGee and I am a member of
the Idaho State Board of Education. You are about to see a one-hour show called
“It’s Elementary,” which has created much discussions in Idaho. It has been
termed a documentary on how the subject of homosexuality might be treated in
elementary schools.
The manager of Idaho Public Television is authorized to
schedule the programming. Thus the airing of “It’s Elementary” was scheduled
before the state board became aware of its conentent. The program does not
represent the view of State Board of Education members, nor has it been approved
by the State Board of Education.
This show is not for children. It is not a school
curriculum. It has not been authorized to be shown in Idaho’s public schools.
It is a one-time airing of a television program. If any showing of this film or
promoting of the film takes place in any Idaho public school classroom, it is
not with the endorsement of the Idaho State Board of Education.
If after viewing this program you have strong opinions one
way or another, you will be in a better position to work with your local school
board and have your voice be heard on this very sensitive subject.
Thank you very much for your time and allowing me to speak
to you this evening.
