Develop academic skills necessary
for success in this and other college courses

OBJECTIVES FOR CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN
EXPERIENCE
- The course provides opportunities to
learn about and discuss America’s ethnic, racial, and economic
diversity, as well as issues relating to gender and sexual identity.
- The course provides opportunities to develop
critical thinking skills through creating and evaluating arguments
from a wide spectrum of viewpoints.
- The course provides opportunities to consider
the methods of inquiry of a variety of disciplines in the humanities
and social sciences, including history, literature, sociology,
anthropology, and philosophy.
- The course provides opportunities to consider
a variety of aesthetic modes, including drama, poetry, popular and
classical music, film, and dance.
- The course encourages understanding of
contemporary American experience in light of past events that shaped
present circumstances.
- The course encourages understanding of
contemporary American experience in the context of global events
that continually affect national culture.
- The course provides opportunities to develop
computer skills.
- The course provides opportunities to practice
speaking, writing, and presentation skills needed for academic
success.
- The course encourages engagement in campus
events beyond the classroom, such as lectures, recitals, gallery
