AIST 320 The Celluloid Indian: American Indians in Popular Film (3 cr)

May be used as general education credit in J-3-d. Examines the representation of American Indians in film from early-mid 20th century Hollywood westerns to late 20th and early 21st century films made by Indians themselves. Traces changes in the cinematic depictions of Indian peoples and historical and cultural reasons for those changes. Emphasizes Indian-made film as extension of oral tradition, as well as indigenous aesthetics. (Spring only)
