BibliU Inclusive Access (Instructor Help)

Contact BibliU Support
support@bibliu.com

BibliU provides a partnership between the VandalStore and various publishers to provide Inclusive Access (IA) Digital Book materials to students. Instructors use BibliU Course Materials to reduce student cost in comparison to traditional print text and to ensure that every student in the course has access to the course materials by the first day of class.

Faculty must order Inclusive Access publisher materials through the VandalStore for EACH upcoming semester. Please set up BibliU Course Materials in your Canvas course as soon as possible to resolve any issues before classes start. Consider posting the Student Help Page for BibliU in your Canvas course as a resource for your students.

How BibliU Works

  • BibliU is a digital learning platform which provides students with access to academic materials from various publishers, including textbooks, courseware, and OER. UI’s contract with BibliU is for its “Inclusive Access” program which provides students with access to course materials on the first day of class. Note: Students can Opt-Out if they wish before UI’s last day to drop a course.
  • Students are automatically billed for BibliU publisher content when they are enrolled in a course using BibliU Course Materials. (Note: BibliU's license agreement gives students access to course materials for 180 days.)
  • Students may "opt out" at any time between the first day of classes and the Add/Drop deadline. Students who "opt out" are responsible for obtaining access to the required materials on their own. (Note: The VandalStore does not stock textbooks for classes signed up to use BibliU Course Materials.)
  • UI Student Accounts will begin to process refunds requested during the "opt out" period AFTER  the "opt out" period ends. (If a student drops the class by the Add/Drop deadline, they are not required to "opt out" in order to receive a refund.)

Linking to BibliU

Publisher textbooks offered through BibliU appear in the “BibliU Course Materials” link added by faculty to their Canvas course menu. This also provides an Opt-Out choice for students. Thus, you MUST add a BibliU Course Materials link to your course to give students access to the course publisher materials. You may add the link to the Course Navigation (Option 1) or you may add it to a Canvas Module (Option 2).

Add a BibliU link to the Course Navigation (Option 1)

  • Select Settings from the course left menu
  • Select the Navigation tab at the top
  • Scroll down to the block of items hidden from students to locate the BibliU Course Materials
  • Drag and drop BibliU Course Materials into the upper block of items to add it to the Course Navigation.
  • Press Save at the bottom of the screen.
  • BibliU Course Materials should appear in the Course Navigation on the left.

Add a BibliU link to a Canvas Module (Option 2)

STEP 1

  • Click on Modules (see left menu)
  • Create a new Module (e.g., click +Module)
  • Enter a Module Name (e.g., BibliU Course Materials)
  • Press Add Module

STEP 2

  • Click on the Plus icon (+) to the far right of the Module created in Step 1

STEP 3

  • From the pulldown menu, select External Tool
  • Select BibliU Course Materials
  • Press Add Item

STEP 4

  • Click the Module Publish icon --> green circle
  • Click the BibliU Link Publish icon --> green circle

Confirm BibliU Materials Appear

Once the BibliU link has been added to the course via Option 1 --or-- Option 2 above, follow the steps below to confirm BibliU materials show the publisher book(s) for your course.

  • Click on the newly added BibliU link. (For more information, review Linking to BibliU)

  • Confirm the BibliU materials listed show the publisher books for your course. Keep in mind that BibliU shows all publisher materials associated with your Canvas account and not just the materials related to the course you are currently viewing.

DO NOT use View as Student when testing BibliU. Instead, verify that you see the publisher materials for your course listed in the BibliU link when viewing as the course instructor.

If you do not see the BibliU materials you were expecting, please email support@bibliu.com and cc ken.wiley@bibliu.com. Include the following:
    • School (i.e., University of Idaho)
    • Detailed description of the issue
    • Screenshot (optional)

  • Remember to Publish your Course for student access by the first day of class.

(Optional) Setup "Courseware"

  • Courseware is often offered as a bundled option for publisher textbooks. Courseware adds interactive elements to enhance the learning experience by providing interactive learning materials like quizzes and assignments.
  • If you have requested Publisher "Courseware" for your course, login to your publisher site to set up the courseware environment. Use the appropriate publisher provided support for assistance with this.
  • Next, link the Publisher "Courseware" to your Canvas course:
    • Go to Settings > Navigation
    • Drag the appropriate Publisher LTI Courseware Tool up to the "available block" and press Save
    • See 3rd-Party Tools Available in Canvas for a full list of LTI Courseware currently setup for Canvas.

How Students "opt out"

Opt Out is the choice given to students to decide whether they would like to receive materials through Canvas via BibliU Course Materials or obtain their course materials somewhere else.

  • Click on the BibliU Course Materials link located in the Canvas course
  • Click "Opt Out" next to the appropriate book (circled in red below)
  • Return any time prior to the "opt out" deadline to "opt back in"
  • Access to the BibliU Course Materials will be removed after U of I's Add/Drop date
  • Refunds requested during the opt-out period for BibliU Course Materials will be processed AFTER the opt-out period ends (i.e., after UI's Add/Drop date).
