Advanced Field Botany

BIOL 460/560 @ the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus

What to expect

The 2019 course will run from Sunday, June 9th through Saturday, June 22nd and will be based out of the UI McCall Field Campus. Students should arrive in Moscow, ID by Saturday, June 8th. The group will depart for McCall together on Sunday, June 9th for an early afternoon arrival at the field campus. Alternatively, students may choose to meet at the McCall Field Campus on Sunday, June 9th.

Throughout the course, we will alternate days in the field and the classroom. Field days will strategically target a diversity of habitats/plant communities throughout the Payette National Forest. Students should be prepared for outdoor physical activity, including hiking and carrying equipment over rocky terrain. Appropriate attire and gear should consider hot sun, rain, and insects.

Classroom days will be focused on identifying the collected specimens using a mix of short lectures, discussions, keying exercises, and hands-on learning activities.

The research goal of the collecting expeditions is centered on conducting general botanical surveys to document the diversity and distribution of vascular plants in Idaho.
