Descriptions of ratings

Poor - Photographs will be of very poor quality, with loss of color and fine detail. Bitmapped graphics will also be of poor quality. Text will be readable but not pleasant to read on screen. No customized background colors or textures, and no customized colored text will be displayed by Netscape 1.0 or Mosaic. The data transfer rate of the 14400 kbps MODEM is relatively slow (lower speed MODEMs, e.g., 2400 BAUD, are not practical for accessing sites that use images) and will result in acceptable speed for display of text documents and very slow display of graphics and photographs.

Good - Photographs will be of acceptable quality, although some loss of color and fine detail may be evident. Bitmapped graphics will also be of acceptable quality. Text will be readable on screen. Custom backgrounds, textures, and text colors will be displayed. The data transfer rate of the 28800 kbps MODEM is acceptable, although the display of photographs and large bitmapped graphics may be slow. Faster MODEMs are available (e.g., 33600 kbps rates and higher) for faster data transfer.

Very Good - Photographs, graphics, and text will generally be of very good quality. The data transfer rate of the 28800 or higher kbps MODEM is acceptable, although the display of photographs and large bitmapped graphics may be slow. Custom backgrounds, textures, and text colors will be displayed. A direct hardware connection to the internet, consisting of a network board and fiber optic cable, provides the fastest rate of data transfer in the internet.
