Year(s) of mentoring: Spring semester 2005
Value of working as a mentor:  Learning more about the topics as you explain them to others.  Observing the different people’s learning styles.  Getting to share some of your knowledge and learn new things from the students.

Value of working as a mentor:   Teamwork: leadership/followership.  Providing insightful, growth promoting, and beneficial feedback.  The importance of communicating a plan consistently and effectively.

Value of working as a mentor:  Promotes educational support and peer teaching environment.  It helps me and them.  Teaches everyone involved about mentoring and how it can help the mentor and the mentee.  Creates a relationship and link between the professor and the students as well.  Feedback, self evaluation, assessment of mentors and mentees and instructors, leadership development, etc.

Value of working as a mentor:  Learning about people's perspective and how everyone has a different way of solving problems.  Getting to  know the younger classmen and how I can help enhance their learning. 

 

Name:  Anna Henson
2005 status: Master of Science student at U of Washington, teaching assistant
Year(s) of mentoring: 2003-4 (spring-summer-fall-spring)
Value of working as a mentor:  Learning to give feedback and explore the mentee's representation has provided me with great tools for teaching.  My team building and leadership skills from the mentoring program have also given me a great advantage in my current classes and projects.

Year(s) of mentoring: .5 years (Spring 2003-Fall 2004)

Value of working as a mentor:  I gained social interactive skills, the ability to communicate my ideas effectively, and how take and use criticism.  Technically, I really learned the engineering process.  Lastly, I gained a lot of valuable friendships that I wouldn't have had the opportunity to develop without mentoring

Value of working as a mentor:  As a mentor I have grown tremendously as a communicator, engineer and a leader.  I gained valuable insight on how people learn (including myself), and how to work on a team.  Plus I have gained experience leading my peers.

For me: Examine team dynamics and participate in multiple groups within one semester.  For the students: My goal is to help ME 223 students recognize and stay focused on course objectives.  This class can’t compare their answers with Bob - (Back of book)

Value of working as a mentor:  Effectively communicating the proper engineering process through logical reasoning without appearing like a know-it-all.  Ensuring that the mentee understands the problem using his/her own representation (not my own) of the situation.  Instilling good engineering practices in mentees through demonstration and feedback by the mentors.
