19th Century Industrial Revolution Images

It's important to remember that when Marx published The Communist Manifesto in 1848:

  1. Slavery was still legal in the United States
  2. Slavery was legal in Russia
  3. Women were 70 years away from being able to vote or hold public office in the United States
  4. There were no free "public" schools in England -- even the very radical, progressive Forster Elementary Education Act 1870 only covered students 5-10 years of age, and parents still had to pay for the education.
  5. In 1918 Parliament passed the radical reform limiting industrial child work days to 12 hours.   These were, of course, six day working weeks.
  6. There were of course absolutely no protections for workers whatsoever, in terms of insurance in the case of death or dismemberment.
