Laboratory Maintenance
This should be an obvious point but is necessary that you leave the laboratory as
close as possible to the state in which you originally found it. This is from a standpoint
of common courtesy and prevention of cross-contamination of experiments.
When you leave for the day......
- Clean up any common area lab benches this means the areas around computers, the
diode array, GC's, HPLC's and especially the BALANCES.
- Avoid leaving unlabeled vials/flasks in these areas, or on your own bench for that
matter.
- Put away all tools and voltmeters.
Consumables.
I often times have found that the lab lacks basic items such as paper towels,
8.5x11" paper, disposable pipettes, or N2 gas. Be aware
that I cannot keep track of these materials in the lab and it is your job to make sure
that the lab remains stocked. Please take upon yourselves to keep the lab stocked. The
consumables manager is below.
Computers.
I cannot find the time to maintain all the computers as I have done in the past.
So I will appoint a computer manager below. Please follow these rules.
- Do not under any circumstances turn off the antivirus programs. Swift capital
punishment will be delivered to those who insist on doing so.
- Create and use directories on each PC with your name and back up your data often.
If you need a zip disk let me know.
- If you install a program on one of the PC's let the computer manager know. If the
program disrupts the OS be prepared to fix the problem. If you break it you will fix it.
Ben Presnall is our IT specialist and can help you with problems.
Balances.
The balances look better of late. You all know we have had problems in the past.
Here are the rules for the balances:
- Clean up the balance after EVERY USE.
- Do not leave any residue around or in the balances.
- The top loader can be used for most of our studies. It can be adjusted to the
nearest 0.001 g. Use the analytical balance when the experiment calls for it, i.e.
significant figures, masses below 0.001 g.
