Proper disposal of chemical wastes
Each Student should have his/her own waste bottle. The bottle should be glass. In rare instances some wastes can be discarded into the sink. Please check with me before you do this. Generally each waste bottle should contain compatible or related products. In some cases you can share waste bottles with someone else. Each waste bottle should be clearly labeled with the following information:
Name
Print your name in large letters
Contents
Rather than a detailed list, describe in general what is in the bottle. Example:
Organic solvents: Methanol, DMF, etc
Buffers: phosphate, HEPES, etc
Organics: phenol, biphenyl, etc
Metals: Magnesium, Fe etc.
Log Book
The log book should contain an estimate of the running total of the mass of each waste product. Keep of log book next your waste bottle. The book should be in plain sight to a casual observer.
Waste Compatibility
Please ask if you have any questions. Generally, remember never to mix acids (especially nitric acid) with organic solvents!
Disposal
At the end of every semester we will spend a group meeting filling out waste forms and submitting them to University Health and Safety
ASK QUESTIONS for anything you are unsure of, there are no stupid questions.
