Lesson 4:
Screening, Assessment, Diagnosis, and Client Placement |
Introduction:
Individuals who enter treatment undergo a variety of
procedures. Some of these procedures involve screening the client to
determine if they need a more thorough examination.
Here, a variety of instruments are used. Some of these have high
reliability and validity. Others do not. If necessary, a client
may undergo a substance abuse assessment. This procedure is more
thorough and can include medical, psychological, as well as addiction's
assessments. Furthermore, in addition to paper and pencil tests, a clinical interview
with the client, their employers, friends, and family may be included. If the
client is in need of services, they are then placed in an appropriate
treatment setting. In this process, some clients may only need
education, others may need detoxification from some drug, while others may
need to be placed in an intensive care facility. As part of this process,
counselors may use a variety of techniques such as motivational interviewing
and confrontation. Finally, the entire process of an assessment and
treatment placement may involve others such
as social workers, vocational counselors, the representatives within the
legal system.
This section will review this process and generally describe
how screenings, assessment, and placement works. Although we will
describe a variety of instruments and address issues within the process,
this section WILL NOT teach you how to conduct an assessment. That
information is much more detailed than what we describe here. Goal:
Learn about the screening, assessment, and placement of clients that may
be abusing drugs.
