Lesson 6: Treatment of Substance Abuse and Dependence
Treatment of Substance AbuseIntroduction:

During this class, we have examined a variety of issues and models related to substance abuse and dependence.  In this section be begin with a review of interventions that one can used to encourage a person to enter treatment.  Once that decision is made, a variety of interventions can be implemented.  Some of these interventions can include detoxification, the administration of drugs to help in the recovery process, 12 step programs, behavioral interventions, etc.  As we have seen in previous topics, some of these interventions are more effective that others.

This section reviews a variety of treatment options.  Many of these are based on the underlying theoretical models that were discussed earlier.  In the past, the counselor only used the intervention based on the therapeutic model they were trained in or required by the agency.  While this is still true to some extent, newer counselors often use a combination of approaches.  However, the counseling one receives also depends upon the skill level of the counselor.  For example, a person with no degree or training in psychology may use interventions that are totally different from a person with bachelor's degree in Psychology or Social Work.  Further, although these individuals may have some background information, they may not have the skill sets to use therapeutic approaches learned in a masters or Ph.D. program.  Thus, in this section, we will make clear distinctions between, discussions, counseling, and psychotherapy.

Finally, we also want to make clear, having a degree in some area does not equate to exceptional treatment.  Some individuals with minimal training are very successful in assisting clients to begin and maintain sobriety.  However, having a solid background in a variety treatment interventions and training using them is more likely to beneficial to a wide range of clients.  In addition, while this section provides a large amount of information, it is not designed to provide you with the skills to treat other individuals or yourself.  Thus, if you have a substance abuse issue or know of someone with a problem, visit a professionally trained and credentialed individual for treatment.
