Business Travelers: Individuals in non-commercial
motor vehicles traveling to conduct business, attend business meetings or
workshops, engage in selling or purchasing products, etc.
Daily affairs Travelers: Individuals in non-commercial
motor vehicles traveling to conduct everyday activities such as going to
work, taking children to school, grocery shopping, etc.
Day User (Same Day Visitor): Travelers who engage in
pleasure or business travel and do not stay away from home overnight.
Destinations:
Idaho Travel Region: Idaho has been divided into seven
travel regions for administrative purposes. These are:
North (Region 1), North Central (Region 2), Southwestern (Region 3), South
Central (Region 4), Southeastern (Region 5) Eastern (Region 6), and
Central (Region 7).
International Visitor: Any person who travels to Idaho
from a country outside of the United States (Includes Canada).
Lifestyle: A persons pattern of living as expressed by
their interests, motivations, activities, desired experiences, and
beliefs.
Market: The group of actual and potential buyers of a
tourism product or service.
Market Segment: A group of buyers or potential buyers of
tourism products and services that can be characterized by a set of
variables such as demographic market segments, lifestyle market segments,
geographic market segments based on origin, etc.
Mean: The average value for a group of data points.
Median: The middle value if all the data points were
arranged from lowest to highest values.
Non-resident pass thru: Non-residents passing through
Idaho who report being on their way to a destination outside of Idaho--66
percent do not stay overnight in Idaho.
Non-resident visitors: Non-residents traveling to or
within Idaho in motor vehicles.
Overnight Traveler: A visitor who stays at least one night
in a collective or private accommodation (home, hotel, campground,
backcountry, etc.) in Idaho.
Pleasure travelers: Individuals in non-commercial motor
vehicles traveling to engage in leisure activities, outdoor recreation,
relaxing, visiting friends and relatives, or to attend sporting or
cultural events.
Primary Destinations:
Psychographic: A technique of measuring and developing
lifestyle classifications.
Region of Destination: Idaho Travel Region that a
motorists report as their destination.
Region Surveyed: Idaho Travel Region in which motorists
were stopped and interviewed.
Resident Inter-Regional: Idaho residents traveling by
motor vehicle between travel regions in Idaho.
Resident pass thru: Idaho residents passing through who
report being on their way to a destination outside of Idaho--86 percent do
not stay overnight in Idaho.
Resident within Region: Idaho residents traveling by motor
vehicle within the travel region where they live.
Season: For the purposes of this study, Fall is September
7 through November 20th, Winter is November 21 through March 15, Spring is
March 16 through June 14, and Summer is June 15 through September 6.
Due to Idaho State Patrol and Idaho Transportation Department safety
requirements, sampling did not take place on major holidays.
Travel Pattern: For the purpose of this study five travel
patterns were defined:
(1) Resident within Region - Idaho residents traveling by motor
vehicle within the travel region where they live;
(2) Resident Inter-Regional - Idaho residents traveling by motor vehicle
between travel regions in Idaho;
(3) Non-resident Visitors - Non-residents traveling to or within Idaho
in motor vehicles;
(4) Non-resident pass thru - Non-residents passing through Idaho who
report being on their way to a destination outside of Idaho--66 percent
do not stay overnight in Idaho;
(5) Resident pass thru - Idaho residents passing through who report
being on their way to a destination outside of Idaho--86 percent do not
stay overnight in Idaho.
Travel Party: A travel party is a motorist and their
passengers who are driving on Idaho highways in a non-commercial vehicle.
Travelers: For the purposes of this study, travelers are
the individual within a travel party.
Trip Purpose: For the purposes of this study non-commercial
motor vehicle travelers were categorized into three groups:
(1) Daily affairs travelers - Individuals in non-commercial motor
vehicles traveling to conduct everyday activities such as going to work,
taking children to school, grocery shopping, etc.
(2) Business travelers - Individuals in non-commercial motor vehicles
traveling to conduct business, attend business meetings or workshops,
engage in selling or purchasing products, etc.
(3) Pleasure travelers - Individuals in non-commercial motor vehicles
traveling to engage in leisure activities, outdoor recreation, relaxing,
visiting friends and relatives, or to attend sporting or cultural
events.
