As you are aware, we have been dealing with several problems with this week's lab, including space issues and various errors while attempting to produce a grid.  Please follow the suggestions below and attempt to complete the lab exercise.

  1. The folder containing the files for this week's lab is too large to fit in an individual student account on the h drive.  Therefore, the easiest way to complete the lab is to copy the entire arcmaps2 folder from the k drive onto a flash drive.  If you do not have a flash drive, you may copy the folder onto a CD.  However, although you should be able to add themes to ArcView from a CD, you will likely run into difficulty creating grids if your destination folder is on the CD.  In this case, the new grids you create during the exercise will need to outputted to a folder in your account on the h drive, or on the temp (T) drive.
  2. For reasons that are not entirely clear, if there are spaces in any of the folder names in the path to the folder in which you are attempting to add grids from or output grids to, it causes all kinds of problems in ArcView.  For example, if you copy the arcmaps2 folder from the k drive into a folder on your flash drive named "Lab 3" you may not be able to add the idveg_resamp grid, or output any new grids to the arcmaps2 folder.  To avoid this problem, make sure there are no spaces (or any other characters besides letters and numbers) in any of the folders along the path to the folder in which you copy the arcmaps2 folder.  The simplest solution is just to copy the arcmaps2 folder directly onto your flash drive without placing it inside any additional folders.
  3. Some of you have probably experienced the "error copying info tables" error when attempting to create a new grid theme during the lab exercise.  Also for reasons that are not entirely clear, ArcView will not produce the info tables for your new grids if you are attempting to put them directly into the arcmaps2 folder, because a series of "info" files already exists there.  The solution to this problem is to create 1 additional folder inside the arcmaps2 folder in which to place all of your new grids.  For example, if you create a new folder inside the arcmaps2 folder and name it "conversions" (note no spaces or other strange characters), you should be able to output your new grids from the lab exercise into this folder without experiencing any errors.
  4. If you follow these steps and are still unable to complete the lab exercise, the intermediate and final maps have been placed in a folder named "POWERPOINTS" in the wildlife 448 folder on the k drive.  You may use these maps to answer the questions in the problem set.  However, you are still responsible for understanding all of the steps in the lab exercise, reading the GAP analysis paper, and providing thorough and thoughtful answers to the questions.  In addition, if you experience a problem while attempting to complete the exercise and choose to answer the questions using the maps on the k drive, please include in your answers to the problem set a description of what the problem was and at what point in the exercise it occurred so that we can attempt to address it in the future.
