About Me....

"...our gentleman...was of a strong constitution,...a very early riser, and a lover of the chase."  Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote

I am a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where I earned my Ph.D in Earth Resources Engineering (Hydrogeology).  I also hold an M.S. in Geology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a B.S. in Geology from the State University of New York at Cortland, and an A.S. in Math and Science from Cayuga Community College in Auburn, New York.

I have also been privileged to have had a number of great jobs.  Prior to August, 2000, I investigated flow processes in unsaturated, fractured rock for the Earth Sciences Division (ESD) of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), undoubtedly one of the premier research groups in the world.  Before I began work at LBNL I was a Senior Staff Hydrogeologist for Woodward-Clyde Consultants (now part of URS).  I have also worked for the Desert Research Institute, a number of smaller consulting firms, as a timber-cruiser for Colorado State University/US Forest Service, and as an Engineering Aide for the Colorado Department of Highways.  If you're interested in the details, most of them are in a current copy of my CV

Dr. Old Vines
Looking north from Mt. Shasta, CA Apart from my carreer, I have lots of interests and activities.  I am an accomplished swimmer (In 1999 I swam from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco, in a race known as the "Alcatraz Shark-Fest"), rock climber (I took 13th place in the "Spiderman" catagory of the "Keyhole Classic" (Boulder City, Nevada), and solo mountaineer.  Other activities I dabble in include: single-handed sailing, mountain biking, spelunking (caving), and snorkeling (only in tropical waters!).
Over the years I've developed a taste for culture, as well.  I enjoy Opera, the Symphony, and Shakespearean Theater (preferably outdoors), but my hands-down favorite is the Ballet.  I also love good food (my favorite resturant in Moscow is The Red Door; in the SF Bay area it is Mangia Mangia!) and good wine (they don't call me "Dr. Old Vines" for nothin').  Off to the Opera!

I hope you've enjoyed browsing my web page as much as I enjoyed making it!  If you want more information on anything you see here, are interested in studying at the UI Geosciences Department, or just think we are kindred spirits, feel free to drop me an E-mail at jfairley@uidaho.edu.  No matter what you've heard, I'm actually a pretty nice guy!
