The Bo Tree is said to have been planted more than 200 years before the birth of Christ. This species of tree is also known as the peepul tree and is regarded as sacred in South Asia. Its scientific name is Ficus religiosa and it is closely related to the banyan tree. Here you can see it growing out of ruins at the city of Anuradapura, with a statute of Buddha at its base.
