Spiritual Symbols
Special quality of Indigenous symbols - dasshússua - "breaking with the mouth." Power in words, song, images, dance, in these symbolic expressions.
When the perennial archetypes and bones of the creation (in illo tempore) or the spiritual center (axis mundis) are aligned with the overt ceremony or act of retelling of a story (these symbols), an hierophany can occur, a shinning through of the sacred - its meaning and life-force. Mircea Eliade
From the Indigenous experience and given the nature of symbols, story is ultimately an effervescent, transitory intersection and confluence of those participating, an event always in the making. As an oral story is being re-told, reality is made up of storyteller, listener/participants, and a host of others, potentially including those referred to in the story, such as Coyote.
