A little about me...
Concerns involving international issues and social justice shaped my undergraduate and graduate studies. My focus on the former Soviet Union evolved from my family's history in Ukraine and Siberia as well as from the Cold War politics that prevailed throughout my childhood. As radical social change takes place throughout the former Soviet Union, I have been concerned with people's daily strategies in dealing with these changes and, particularly, the experiences of people living away from metropolitan centers (such as Moscow and Kyiv, or Seattle if you live in the Northwest). Growing up in a small town in eastern Washington has heightened my sensitivity to urban bias that frequently shapes policy decisions at state and national levels. Policy planning in post-Soviet societies has hardly deviated from this bias. Thus, my research in Komsomolsk, a small city in central Ukraine, reflects my desire to highlight the day-to-day strategies of people who live in areas perceived peripheral in the process of national and international development planning.
I invite you to explore my website, which includes my academic achievements, my courses and syllabi, my experiences studying and researching abroad, and valuable links to research and news surrounding post-Soviet societies and international development policy.
