Karabagh Elections, June 2005

This is a view of the Lachin Corridor, which is a short and narrow stretch of territory connecting Karabagh to Armenia. The drive between Yerevan (Armenia's capital) and Stepanakert (Karabagh's capital) is several hours long, but the views are so gorgeous and varied, the trip goes by relatively quickly. As you enter Karabagh, you are awed by the rugged and green landscape. This has made de-mining especially arduous.

Administrative Building in Tsmakahogh

The team of informal observers decided to split into small groups of 2-4 individuals who would travel to different areas throughout Karabagh. Even though Karabagh is a small geographical area, its natural ruggedness means that it is difficult to travel directly to different towns and villages. Road conditions vary, too. On the morning of 19 June, I traveled with two other observers (Vahan and Sassoun) to the central and northern region of Karabagh, with mostly small villages nestled inconspicuously on mountain slopes. This is a picture of the administrative building in Tsmakahogh in which the voting took place.

Vank Village

This is a photo taken within the village of Vank. It captures the lush landscape characterizing much of the western and central area of Karabagh. Off in the distance, atop the furthermost ridge, sits an ancient monastary.
