Introduction

Our team chose to utilize two computer programs in analyzing the natural lighting in the foyer, gathering space, and dining areas. These were Lumen Micro Pro which allowed us to model the space three dimensionally and apply calculations to observe light distribution in the existing space and the space with some proposed changes. The other program was Solar 5 which allowed us to see the base case heat gains and losses for all walls and windows. This program also let us experiment with some proposed changes consisting of different sizes of overhangs and fins as well as insulation.

The proposed design in the Lumen Micro analysis contained skylights in the dining area and new windows in the North wall.  We also used Solar 5 to investigate the  impact on temperature caused by vertical and horizontal shading devices on the East and West walls and horizontal overhangs on the North windows.
