The Palace at Sayil is a three story structure with each story set back from the one below.  The Mayans did not build one room directly over another because of the weight of their structures.  Instead they would fill in the lower rooms with rubble concrete before building on top.

The Palace is a good example of the Puuc style with its plain walls on the lower facade and engaged columns on the upper facade.

The El Mirador, the observatory, is a good example of the Mayan roof comb.  The protruding stones on the roof comb supported stucco ornamentation.
