Simon (1973) says that "since the athletic contest is designed to determine which competitor meets the challenge best, fair play requires that competitors not intentionally disregard or circumvent the rules."
Lesson 5 Perspective:Why fair play is difficult to attain but necessary for athletic competition and competitors? ? "...fair play does not merely mean conformity to a set of rules...Fair play depends upon essentially respecting one's opponent just because of his loyalty to his own side. It means a tendency to enjoy, to admire, to applaud, to love, to further that loyalty of his at the very moment when I keenly want and clearly intend to toward his individual deeds and to win this game if I can." J. Royce
Hunter (1998) states, many evil people have been kind and outgoing with the people they liked. But our true character is revealed when we have to extend ourselves and what we value for the tough ones, when we are put in the crucible and have stand for our principles for people we don’t particularly like. Then we find out about how much character we have.
