FOR373: Forest Sampling Methods

Print Print Version

Course at a Glance: Fall 2014

This course provides an introduction to the sampling designs commonly implemented within forest management. It primarily focuses on the statistics and theory of forest resources and management sampling, including topics such as simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, regression estimation, and double sampling. The course will also cover sampling designs for specialty forest products and rare populations.

A major objective of the course is not only for students to learn the basics of sampling design but instill the importance of appropriate designs and what they mean for the standard error of the mean. Discussion of the statistics you covered in Stat251, measurement standards, sampling methods, and errors will be discussed, reinforced, and expanded upon throughout this course. The course culminates with a project, were student groups are expected to develop, implement, analyze, and report on a forest inventory to meet specific objectives.
