The Band was a group of four Canadians and an Arkansas native (Levon Helm) that came together in Toronto in 1964. For most of the next two years they toured with Bob Dylan as his back-up band. In 1966 they rented a house in upstate New York (Big Pink) and the result of the work they did there was their debut album, Music From Big Pink. The disc included several songs written by Bob Dylan as well as some original cuts and it did fairly well on the album charts reaching #30 in the U.S. Over the next two years the group released two more very successful LPs before beginning a decline that culminated with a final concert and documentary, The Last Waltz in 1975.

The group's style was very different from anything ele t the time. It was a mixture of gospel, country, and rock that featured ensemble work as opposed to solos and lyrics that were sometimes very cryptic.

In addition to Music From Big Pink they also released The Band (1968) and Stagefright (1970).
