Varanasi on the Ganges River

(also called Kashi "luminous,"  Benares,  City of Light, City of Shiva, and City of Dead)

One of the Holy Hindu sites, the city of Varanasi, formerly called Benares, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cites in the world, dating back thousands of years to the time of Sumer civilization.

Founded by the god Shiva, his shrine is a focus point of the city.  Bathing in the Ganges River washes away sin and dying there assists in an advantageous rebirth.
