The enclosed area within the walls of Tulum is only 450 yards long by 200 yards wide.

Tulum reached its peak of development between 1200 - 1450 A.D. and was inhabited by no more than 500 people.  It continued to be occupied until around 1618.  It was often used as a defensive stronghold by eastern Maya rebelling against the Spanish.
