Assigned Readings

    Hamill & Knutzen.  2008.  Chapters 10 & 11:

    pages 367-404, 412-455.

Learning Objectives

Terminology

force mass
torque moment
moment arm free body diagrams
kinetics net force
net torque gravity
weight moment of force

Objectives

1. Describe the relationship between force, moment arm, and torque.
2. Draw the moment arm of any force, including muscle force and gravity.
3. Calculate the torque produced by a muscle or by gravity.
4. Draw the line of force of a muscle and identify the potential joint actions that will result from that line of force.
5. Describe how torque is important in understanding movement of body segments at the joints.
6. Discuss the concepts of net force and net torque, and their role in understanding movement of systems.
7. Draw force vectors to represent weight.
8. Draw free body diagrams of systems for analysis in human movement.
