The "Post Office Incident"

The first noticeable split between Old Town and New Town was caused by the local Postal service.  A new post office was built in New Town, in addition to the one already operating in Old Town.  Since both were called the Albuquerque Post Office, it was not clear which one mail was to be directed to, leading to much confusion.  To remedy the situation, county officials closed down the Old Town Post Office.  This angered many Old Town residents, so the post office was reopened but Old Town was renamed Armijo.  This enraged many more people, because not only did New Town get the post office, they also got to keep the name of Albuquerque.  Finally, in 1886, the two towns were officially named Old Albuquerque and New Albuquerque.
