Degree Requirements!

To graduate you will have to complete three sets of requirements (described below) plus electives for 120 total credits. Graduating with a psychology degree also requires a UI gpa of 2.50 or higher.

1. General Education Requirements

  • • Students who begin their education at the University of Idaho as first-year students will complete the UI General Education requirements. Transfer students who have completed 14 or more transferable college credits after high school graduation may choose to complete either the UI General Education requirements or the State Board of Education Core requirements.

  • • Specific requirements depend on catalog year, so students should refer to their degree audit.

2. College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Requirements

  • • Psychology majors must also meet the college’s general requirements for either the B.S. or B.A. degree.

  • • The B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree requires one of the following (a, b, or c)


    • a) Additional coursework in humanities; social sciences; and natural sciences, mathematics, or statistics. (This is in addition to the minimum general education requirements. See degree audit for lists of courses that count toward each area.)

    • b) A double major

    • c) A minor or area of emphasis

  • • The B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree requires additional coursework in humanities; social sciences; and natural sciences, mathematics, or statistics. (This is in addition to the minimum general educational requirements. See degree audit for credits requirements and lists of courses that count toward each area.)

3. Department of Psychology and Communication Studies Requirements

  • • The psychology major requirements include courses that introduce students to the discipline, courses that focus on personal and social approaches to behavior, courses that focus on biological and experimental approaches to behavior, and elective courses that focus on any aspect of psychology.

  • • A grade of C or better must be earned in each psychology course that is applied to the major requirements.
