    A fairly technical, in depth look at the archaeology of China. Little architectural reference except that of primitive people. Provides a good look at the stone tools used by ancient Chinese people. Many images.

    Mainly textual site. It provides information about 5 areas of Chinese architecture: Evolution of Chinese architecture, garden architecture, mausoleum architecture, religious architecture, and residences with quadrangle courtyards. Valuable information is provided but few pictures.

    A very good look at earth sheltered dwellings in China and their design both historically and contemporarily. Provides historical background information into the origins of earth shelters in China. The black and white images and drawings are very informative.

Presses, 1989.
    A technical examination of underground design in China. The book provides photographs and good plans and sections, all in black and white. A more modern approach to earth dwellings is taken that examines contemporary designs rather than historical styles.

University Press, 1995.
    A broad look at architecture of monumental scale in China. Provides overwhelming information. Many images and drawings are included.

    A good overview of vernacular building styles in China. Drawings and images are provided. Many informative black and white photographs included.

    Introduces Chinese rural housing and its diversity. This small text gives a good overview of different styles of Chinese housing. It also provides color plates of examples.

    Small text covering recent archeological finds in China.

Steinhardt, Nacy Shatzman. Liao Architecture. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 1997.
    Provides an in depth look at Liao architecture. It covers a wide variety of topics in good detail.

Treister, Kenneth. Chinese Architecture, Urban Planning, and Landscape Design-A
Series of Essays. Florida: College of Architecture, University of Florida, 1987.
    This is a fairly small text that gives brief descriptions of basic Chinese planning and design. The text provides a good overview and introduction into Chinese design.
