Other Earth Shelters

The term "cave dwelling" in China commonly describes a space dug below ground. However, in addition to pit cave dwellings there exist two other Chinese earth dwellings: Cliffside and Vaulted Cave Dwellings. Cliffside cave dwellings consist of terraces and rooms carved out of the side of a cliff. Vaulted cave dwellings are stone or brick vaulted buildings covered with earth that have one or two stories above ground. Chinese cave dwellings evolved over a period of more than four thousand years. In general, residential dwellings have evolved from below-ground to above-ground structures.
