Primitive Dwellings

Before learning to build houses, primitive Chinese people lived in caves. These caves belonged to Peking Man and were used 300,000 to 1 million years ago. As humans increased in intelligence, primitive people learned to excavate caves. These cave dwellings were called "den residences."

Gradually, primitive people learned to construct dwellings out of branches and thatch. These were called "nest residences." Archaeology revealed two types of "nest" dwellings in Prehistoric China; one was constructed over a shallow pit, the other on a platform of poles. Pit style nest dwellings used the inside bank of a dug pit as walls and one or more thick pillars to prop up the walls or roof.
