Extra Credit #3a

"Glazing Tour of Campus"

Due the Monday after Thanksgiving.  No credit for late projects!

This Extra Credit counts toward your Lab grade.

Several types of high performance glazing are used in campus buildings. Your assignment is to visit four buildings that employ different high performance glazing types for exterior windows. There are at least two buildings on campus for each glazing system. If you are not on campus, seek out buildings with the glazing types below in your locality.

The four glazing types are:
  • Blue/Green Glass
  • Kalwall
  • Metallic reflective glass
  • Glass Blocks
For each building photograph the windows from both the exterior and interior on a sunny day when the sun is shining on the window. (This may take some planning because overcast skies are common in the fall, east and west windows only get sun half the day, and north windows get no sun after the fall equinox. Use weekly weather predictions to help!!!)

Analyze each building visited for daylight, view, and thermal conditions—both subjectively what you feel or think) and objectively (what you can measure or calculate).

In conclusion, compare the four spaces that you analyzed.

Format: 8½" x 11" sheets. Submit as PDF to <mespinosa@uidaho.edu>.

Hint: Kalwall in the Kibbie Dome, but it's not the only place!
