Case Study #1 A Daylighted Room

Supplemental materials:

InsideOut A2–F2

InsideOut Appendix F

You may need all or parts of both of the above PDFs to complete Case Study #1. View them with acrobat and, print only those pages that you need. InsideOut parts A2 – F2 contain procedures for assessing lighting conditions in buildings. Appendix F contains the GDDM lighting footprints.

Lighting Plug in for Revit

The Lighting Analysis plug-in for Revit is a daylighting analysis service that uses Autodesk Rendering cloud service. You can follow installation instructions here.

Illuminance Meter

A free illuminance meter app for androids and iPhones can be installed from Google Play Store or Apple's App Store. eg. Lux Meter, Photometer Pro.

An Excel format copy of the LBL Nomograph, <LBLnomo.xlsx>, is available here and on the studio download drive.

SPOT

You can get a free download: SPOT.

SkyCalc

An updated version of SkyCalc 3.0 that includes climate files for 48 US cities and its manual, Skylighting Guidelines, is available from the Heschong-Mahone Group <http://www.h-m-g.com/downloads.htm>

Glare Analysis

In order to analyze the glare in a view for a hands-on case study you'll need to use a digital camera and borrow a luminance meter as well as use Photoshop and the two procedures,32-bit  Rascal or 64-bit Rascal2 (these are .exe files, so you'll have to get from your TA because UI won't let you download .exe files from the web!!) and Culplite (32-bit) or Culplite2 (64-bit), developed by Jeff Culp at Ball State. There is an illustrated manual that gives step-by-step procedures for performing the analysis.

More Software

See the course software tab for more.

Case Study #2 Site & Building Water Use

Supplemental materials:

InsideOut A4–E4

You may need all or parts of the above PDF to complete Case Study #2. View them with acrobat and, print only those pages that you need. InsideOut parts A4 – E4 contain procedures for assessing water conservation and use in buildings and on sites.

Plumbing Fixture Schedule & WUI calculation

Use this excel file: Plumbing fixture schedule & WUI calc for calculating Water Use Intensity.

Rainfall and Solar Radiation Data

There are two links to websites in this case study. For InsideOut B4.1 you can find rainfall data (monthly precipitation norms) by city for each state on NOAA's NCDA site. Select the 1981-2010 Normals icon, then specify your state and station. The summary data will look like this. For E4.7 you can find average daily solar radiation data for each month by using the PVWatts calculator for your building site. The summary data will look like this.

Stormwater Management Calculator

There's a on-line, free calculator to help you figure the results of stormwater management designs—swales, green roofs, pervious paving, and such. See https://greenvalues.cnt.org/index.php

Case Study #3 A Sustainable Site & Building

Supplemental materials:

Global Warming Potential (GWP) Calculator excel file: <GWP Calculator>

An Excel format copy of SBSE's Regeneration-Based Checklist and an explanation is available at <https://www.sbse.org/resources/regeneration-based-checklist-design-and-construction>.

Malcolm Wells' original checklist is also available.

USGBC's LEED v4 is available on line at <https://www.usgbc.org/sites/all/assets/section/files/v4-guide-excerpts/Excerpt_v4_OM.pdf>. The checklist begins on p22 with less explanation than v3.

Case Study #4 A Performance Space

Supplemental materials:

InsideOut A3–E3

For InsideOut E3.2 & E3.3 you can use an Excel form, <Theater4.xls>, developed by a former ECS student for calculating reverberation time.
